Mothballing ComicsNZ

Kia ora koutou,

We are closing down ComicsNZ, as of 13th December. Here are some FAQs, please email makerspace@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz if you have any others.

1.            Why is ComicsNZ being shut down?

ComicsNZ was started to meet a perceived need…an online space for NZ comics creators. While many people have their work online, and some in zines, it seemed logical to have the library as a place to collect and promote them in one place.
However, this initiative is not meeting a need. There were two primary measures: the ability of the site to get interest in the comics making community (measured by an increase in submissions), and the ability of the site to spark the interest and imagination of Auckland Libraries staff (measured by staff willingness to be involved). Neither has been successful.

2.            What happens to the content on ComicsNZ?

It stays. While the site will not accept any new content, existing content will be kept, and will remain searchable. All feeds will be disconnected, though.

3.            What have the highlights been?

·         Getting Debra Boyask’s work online
·         Playing a part in Michael Sanders get published through Wheelers
·         Running comics making workshops with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
·         Collaborating with Chromacon 2015
·         Becoming friends with Faction

4.            What if I wanted to re-open ComicsNZ or have an idea around how it could work?

Please get in touch!
Email librariessocialmedia@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

5.            What have we learnt from this experience with ComicsNZ?

·         That is important to fail. A complete absence of failure means we have not stretched ourselves enough.
·         That an idea in itself may be good…but be in the wrong time and place.
·         That a system needs to be built with measures right from the start, rather than as an afterthought.

For those of you that have been supportive and encouraging…thank you!

-Baruk

Fun fact: was interviewed for GoExplore. In it Moonbeard is described as “one of the most talked about webcomics around,” which is definitely a stretch but we can pretend. I kinda hate all my answers but I think I’ll hate all of my answers, to everything, forever.

The Angriest Mountain

The Angriest Mountain

This mountain is the angriest mountain.

Hi! So, I am back and updating this site again so expect lots more comics on here. Also: check out Moonbeard over on LINE Webtoon because I update weekly over there. To keep abreast of Moonbeard updates check out the Moonbeard Facebook page. To learn more about mountains, visit this mountain website.

Here are some Mountain Facts:

  1. The first mountain was invented by Sir Edmund Hillary, from New Zealand. He named it Everest after his great grandfather, who was Sir Everest Hillary.
  2. Anyone unlucky enough to be born on a mountain is forever linked to it and can never leave.
  3. Under every mountain is an inverse mountain. It is the same in every way, but inverted.
  4. When a mountain gives birth, all the other mountains in the area throw it a mountain-party. That’s where the popular catch-phrase “What is this, a mountain-party?!” comes from.
  5. While volcanoes are theorised to exist, no living human has ever seen one up close.

True love! Or something.

Hey I’m outta country for a few weeks—headed to Japan for a spell—so probably won’t be able to update this site while I’m gone, but updates over on LINE Webtoon will continue as normal. Also if you haven’t been following me on Webtoon then there are fifteen Moonbeard comics you have yet to read. So you should go do that.

Best Friend Cats 27

Best Friend Cats 27

The 41st comic featuring everyone’s favourite cats who are best friends.

Fun fact: this comic was commissioned for the birthday of JXNBLK, who recently turned 100. Happy birthday!

Fun fact 2: you too can commission me to draw you birthday comics. If everyone in the world did this just once, and I draw one a day, I’d have consistent comic work for over 7 billion days!

Is it True? Well Maybe.

I found this comic while going through the piles of paper I have. I don’t know about you but comics seems to generate a lot of paper for me. Anyway. I have no idea when I made this comic, maybe sometime in 2009. I can see why this one vanished into my piles of paper. […]

nnrghh part 8

nnrghh part 8

A comic! Grisly. By popular demand, a return to the wacky adventures of this pair. You can read the other comics in the series if you like. Well, six of the others. The seventh was an exclusive drawn for Moonbeard Volume One. There’s no continuity though, aside from maybe slightly more blood pooling. So you can just jump in here, you don’t need all the history.

Last comic I mentioned a Kickstarter you should definitely give to. Good news: you still can! It’s for The Sunday Comics, a giant comics anthology. I’ll be in there. I even had a reward tier, but that’s all gone so tough luck.

Also, NZ comics legend Barry Linton has a Kickstarter up, if you’re a fan of NZ comics. Or comics.  You should definitely give to that too.

You should just give to all of them, every Kickstarter. All of them. Give everything to everyone. Everything you have

who we say we are

who we say we are

Hello! Space comic. I don’t know. I really don’t. But I have good news: if you hate it, I have another comic up over on LINE Webtoon you might not hate. It is a sort of sequel to this comic from a while back.

Also! Have you seen this really great chimp gif? It’s a really great chimp gif.

Also! Do you like crowd funding? Who doesn’t! There is an ambitious Sunday Comics Kickstarter I’m contributing to. Go give it all your money or something

Pizza.

Probably wouldn’t bet on this particular comic actually being continued. I mean, I know you’re invested in the storyline now and I’m really sorry about that but I think we can all agree it’s for the best

In case you have an irrational dislike of pizza, there are also a couple of comics over here you may not have seen. Hooray!
